Salvage Repair Costs by Damage Type: What Each Loss Really Involves

The damage type on an auction listing is the single best early predictor of what the repair will involve. Before you price a single part, the words front end, rear, side, flood, or theft tell you which systems are probably involved, which labor operations dominate the job, and how much of the damage you should expect to find only after teardown. Learning the repair profile of each damage type lets you triage listings in seconds and size your contingency intelligently instead of applying the same guess to every car.
What follows is a profile of each major damage type: what the repair typically involves, what drives the labor, and where the hidden costs concentrate. Actual numbers vary enormously with the vehicle, the severity, and your local labor market, so treat these as maps of the work rather than price lists.

Collision damage: direction decides the scope
Front collision
Front hits are the most common salvage listing and the most layered repair. The visible work is bumper, hood, fenders, and lights, but the front of a car is also where the cooling stack, the crash sensors, and most ADAS hardware live. A meaningful front impact usually means cooling components, possible radiator support or frame-rail involvement, an alignment, and camera or radar calibration. Labor concentrates in teardown and reassembly — everything at the front overlaps something else — and hidden-damage risk sits behind the bumper beam, where crush structures do their work out of sight.
Rear collision
Rear hits look simpler and often are, but the floor pan, spare tire well, and rear body panel are structural on most unibody cars, and a hit hard enough to reach them turns a bolt-on repair into a welded one. Check for involvement of the fuel system, the exhaust, and on rear- and all-wheel-drive cars the differential. Blind-spot radar and parking sensors live in the rear bumper on many models, so calibration belongs in the rear-hit budget more often than buyers expect.
Side impact
Side hits carry the widest range of outcomes. A door skin and a mirror is a light job; a hit that reaches the B-pillar or rocker is structural work with high labor hours and material-specific procedures. Side impacts also fire side and curtain airbags at lower thresholds than frontal systems, and they load the suspension on that corner sideways. The photos matter more here than anywhere else: the difference between cosmetic and structural is a few inches of crush depth.
Water and weather losses
Flood
Flood damage is less a repair scope than an open question. The work is not measured in panels but in how high the water rose and how long it stayed: carpets, insulation, connectors, modules, and bearings all absorb water damage that surfaces over months rather than days. There is often little body labor at all — the cost is disassembly, drying, cleaning, and replacing electrical components as they fail. Flood cars deserve the largest contingency of any damage type, and buyers who cannot absorb a slow drip of electrical failures should generally pass.
Hail
Hail is the most contained damage type: dents across horizontal panels with the mechanical systems untouched. The repair is labor-heavy and parts-light — paintless dent repair where the metal and paint allow it, conventional bodywork and refinishing where they do not. Scope scales with dent count and with whether the roof, which is structural to repaint properly, is involved. Because the car usually runs and drives normally, hail listings attract bidders, so the margin is often thinner than the easy repair suggests.
Theft recovery and vandalism
Theft recovery
A recovered theft is an inventory problem before it is a repair problem. The damage is whatever the thief wanted plus whatever they broke getting it: wheels, catalytic converters, airbags, seats, electronics, and increasingly complete interiors. The estimate starts with a meticulous list of what is missing, and the risk is that absence is harder to photograph than damage — a missing module or harness may not show up until the car refuses to start. Ignition and lock damage, plus reprogramming keys and immobilizers, belong in every theft-recovery budget.
Vandalism
Vandalism scope is defined by malice rather than physics, which makes it unpredictable in shape but often predictable in kind: scratched paint down the side, broken glass, slashed seats or tires. Keyed paint sounds minor and is not — a scratch line across four panels is four panels of refinishing plus blends, which is why vandalism cars are frequently paint-heavy estimates with almost no mechanical work. Glass adds cost directly and, when a windshield carries a camera, brings calibration with it.
Airbag deployment: a multiplier, not a category
Deployed airbags appear alongside collision damage rather than instead of it, and they multiply the bill. Each deployed bag means the bag itself, often the seatbelt pretensioners, sometimes the seat or dash panel the bag deployed through, plus the control module and crash sensors. These are safety parts where cutting corners is not acceptable, and the labor includes diagnosis and verification that the restraint system is fully functional afterward. When photos show hanging bags, add a significant restraint-system line to the estimate before you think about anything else.
